Great Resignation wave grows as half of UK employees seek other work

The wave of Great Resignation churn continues to grow as 50% of UK employees are looking to switch jobs, naming non-competitive salary and benefits (24%) as the main motivating factor.

This is according to new research from HR and payroll specialist SD Worx, with other top reasons listed for changing job as poor work atmosphere (14%), lack of growth opportunities (10%), and no job security (9%).

In considering to leave a company, sustainability and inclusivity credentials come low on the list of motivating factors for employees, as only 2% say no diversity and inclusion, as well as no attention to environment and the community, tip the scales in favour of quitting.

When it comes to career restlessness, the UK is most definitely not alone in Europe. In fact, German employees are most likely to hunt for a new job (55%), closely followed by France (51%), and then the UK (50%), with employees from Belgium (40%), and the Netherlands (33%) being more likely to stay put.

Colette Philp, UK HR Country Lead at SD Worx says: “With mounting challenges around managing wellbeing, companies must be vigilant when it comes to ensuring employees are happy in their roles. It’s a buyer’s market for jobs, and employees know they can call the shots for opportunities that lie ahead.

“This is why employers need to get the practical basics right and ensure employees feel genuinely valued. Ironing out benefits packages, company perks, motivational pay policy and career progression, as well as ensuring a pleasant working atmosphere, can all help boost employee engagement.

“If any company wants to continue on a strong growth trajectory, then it's vital to showcase company commitment to workforce wellbeing, not only to limit Great Resignation talent attrition, but to attract the highest calibre of candidates for future vacancies too.”
